Hi! My name is Matthew Cabrera, and I’m a 13-year-old student at Fay School, where I’ve been since Pre-K. I was born in Washington, D.C., and now live in Massachusetts with my sister and my mom, and dad. People know me for being curious, optimistic, and always ready to learn new things. I like to look at every challenge as a chance to grow and get better.

I love playing sports, especially soccer, tennis, and basketball, because they push me to work hard, stay active, and be a good teammate. I also play the violin, which helps me focus and be creative. Something really important to me is helping others. I’ve done community service projects to support kids and families in Guatemala and Colombia, where my mom and dad are from.

I had the chance to travel to Guatemala with my family, and it was one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve ever had. We brought toys and sports equipment to give to local children, and seeing their smiles was unforgettable.
My family and I also helped the community by supporting a clean water project, where we worked on improving access to safe water and hygiene for kids. It made me realize how small actions can make a big difference in people’s lives. Helping others made me feel proud, grateful, and even more inspired to keep finding ways to give back.

My family is a huge part of my life. My mom is from Colombia and my dad is from Guatemala, and they both came to the U.S. about 20 years ago. They’ve taught me the importance of working hard and being grateful for what I have.
I often help my parents with their construction business on weekends, and I’ve also had the chance to visit Guatemala, where I gave toys to kids who aren’t as fortunate. That experience reminded me how important it is to give back.

I started learning the violin when I was very young, and it has been a big part of my life ever since. At first, it was challenging to get the right sound or keep the rhythm, but I never gave up. Over the years, I’ve invested a lot of time practicing, performing in concerts, and improving my technique.
Playing the violin has taught me patience, focus, and the importance of hard work. It’s also something I truly enjoy — whether I’m playing solo or with my school’s ensemble, music helps me express myself in a different way and connect with others through sound.
